transcription Flashcards
1
Q
define transcription
A
the process of which a copy of DNA is made in the nucleus to be transported to ribosomes for proteins synthesis
2
Q
describe the properties of mRNA
A
- no H bonds
- 1 strand
- single helix
- ribose
3
Q
what is the sense strand?
A
strand which contains exact code needed for protein synthesis (5’-3’)
4
Q
what is the antisense strand
A
complementary copy of the sense strand that acts as a template (3’-5’)
5
Q
summarise the process of transcription
A
- DNA helicase unwinds double strands and hydrolyses H bonds to form a sense and antisense strand
- free RNA nucleotides pair with antisense strand using complementary base pairing, forms H bonds
- RNA nucleotides join via phosphodiester bonds
- the new strand is mRNA & leaves nucleus through a pore after detaching from antisense strand
