Tramatic Brain Injury Flashcards
Primary brain injury
Damage done to the brain from initial traumatic event e.g. concussions, lacerations, hematomas
Concussions
Short duration of loss of consciousness, but do not result in histopathological lesion
Contusions
Least severe of lesions.
Consist of parenchymal hemorrhage and edema.
Laceration
Physical disruptions in the parenchyma
Hematomas
If occurs within the parenchyma, subarachnoid, subdue always, and epidural space = increased pressure in the regions
Secondary brain injury
Occurs as a consequence of events triggered by the initial injury
Causes of secondary brain injury
Hypotension, hypoxia, systemic inflammation, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, hypercapnia, hyperthermia, electrolyte and acid-base imbalance = all causes an increase in ICP, cerebral edema, and neuronal death.
