Trains And Cars Flashcards
What is a tram
A vehicle which runs along a track on a public road
What used to pull trams
Horses
What powers a tram now
Electricity from overhead cables
Tel the History of trams
More than 2000 years ago romans and Greeks had horse-drawn wagons on stone tracks. First wagons pulled on a specific path.
In 1550s Europe used trams on wooden tracks (easier to lay and smoother ride)
In 1700s wooden tracks were replaced by iron tracks and called a tramway (longer lasting than wood)
Who invented the steam engine
James Watt
What fuel does a steam engine use and how does it work
It burns wood or coal or oil as fuel to make steam, the steams powers the mechanical parts of the engine
What transport uses steam
Trains and ships
What was the New Castle
A steam locomotive (train) invented by Richard Trevithick (can you spell his name?!) which was the first self propelled locomotive to do actual work so it had a huge impact on/ effect on trnasportation
Who invented the first locomotive to carry passengers and what was it called
George Stephenson , the Rocket
List six reasons steam engines had a massive impact on transportation
- Trains wereFASTER than horses wagons and bikes
- Trains were CHEAPER
- Trains made long trips more COMFORTABLE
- Trains were SAFER than wagons
- Trains were more RELIABLE than wagons
- Before cars and planes trains were the most important way to transport people and goods over the land
What replaced the steam locomotive
Electric locomotives
Where do trams get their electricity from
Get them from overhead wires and others get them from a third “live” rail on the track
4 reasons Why are electric locomotives motives better than steam trains
Cleaner, quieter, faster, more reliable
What is the fastest train in the world
Bullet trains
What is a maglev
It stands for magnetic levitation - these trains used to magnets to move the train along
