What is an internal combustion engine?
It combines fuel with oxygen from the air and then ignites this mixture to create an explosion.
This pushes the piston in a cylinder which is connected to the wheel creating a turning motion.
What are the advantages of using an internal combustion engine? Name 3
- It is lighter than a steam engine
- Can be used in small vehicles like cars
- More powerful than the steam engine or animal power
What are the disadvantages of an internal combustion engine?
- The exhaust gases are harmful to the environment.
- Many moving parts causes wear and tear on the engine.
- The engine has to be constantly oiled and maintained by a highly skilled mechanic.
