what is a personal foul?
a personal foul is a player foul which involves illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live which hinders an opponent from performing normal offensive or defensive manuevers.
what is a common foul?
a personal foul that is neither flagrant nor intentional, nor committed on a player in the act of trying for a field goal.
what is an intentional foul?
a personal or technical foul that is premeditated. ex. contact that neutralizes an advantageous position, contact that is not from a legitimate attempt to play the ball, excessive contact with someone who is not in possession of the ball, contact with the thrower in
what is a flagrant foul?
a personal or technical foul that is violent or excessive, or a technical noncontact foul deadball conduct that is extreme, persistant, vulgar or abusive. a flagrant foul is worse than a technical foul and results in immediate ejection
how many techs before ejection?

what is a technical foul?
a display of unsportsmanlike conduct at any time by any person on the team (player, bench player, coach). If they are being nasty, but not necessarily over violent, give them a tech.
Hit foul
a hit is called for illegal use of hands. any tactic using the hands, arms, or body that allows a player to control, hold, impede, push, divert etc. the movement of an opposing player is a foul. when a player jabs another player with hands/forearms, it is a foul.
hold foul
a player that places both hands on another player, grabs them in a way that impedes movement, or wraps their arm around another player
push foul
when a player uses their hand/body to move/prevent the movement of an opponant it is a foul
Charge
a charge is a type of player control foul. This occurs when the player with the ball fouls a defender who has obtained legal guarding position. there is no free throw for this, and the ball is awarded to the opponent for throw in at the POI. Any contact to the torso if a defender who has obtained legal guarding position is illegal contact. (dont bother if it is obviously incidental and doesn’t create an advantage) There is no free throw for this even at or after the 7th team foul.
blocking foul
blocking is illegal personal contact by the defense that impedes the progress of the opponent with or without the ball, any attempt to block that involves illegal torso contact when the defender does not have legal guarding position.
when is/isn’t there player control?
neither team nor player control exists during a dead ball, a jump ball, or when the ball is in flight during a try for a field goal

a team’s frontcourt is the side of the court where its offensive zone is
what is a violation
a violation is something illegal that a team/player does that does not involve contact. Violations result in the other team being awarded the ball
what are the most common violations
travel, double dribble (illegal dribble), carry/palming (illegal dribble), 5-second violation (inbounding)
What are some of the more uncommon violations
goaltending, basket interference, 10 second violation (backcourt), 5- second closely guarded

if a player interferes with a shot that is either on a downward flight, or above the basket rim in an imaginary cilander.
Basket interference
when a player touches the ball or basket while the ball is on the rim.
10-second violation (backcourt)
if an offensive team doesnt move the ball past the center line into the frontcourt within 10 seconds.
5-second closely guarded
when in their frontcourt, an offensive player is in possesion of the ball (dribbling or holding) for more than five seconds without passing it. this is a violation on the offensive player.

what zone should the lead cover?
all of the paint and everything on the sidelines that is the length of the paint

everything that the lead doesn’t cover
where should the lead be in relation to the ball
the lead should always beat the ball down the court
who covers which lines on out of bounds calls
the lead covers the baseline by the net and their closest sideline, and the trail covers the mid court line and their closes sideline
How should you signal an out of bounds call?
1 short whistle
where should the inbound occur?
inbound the ball closest to the sideline/endline where the infraction occurred. never inbound the ball directly under the basket
who marks three pointers?
the trail official marks all three pointers, and jump shot 3 pts except for those in the opposite corner
what are the steps to call a foul?
- call foul and announce if it is shooting or inbounds

what are the steps to report a foul?
on the spot:
- strong whistle +fist
- communicate what is happening next (how many free throws etc.
- make eye contact with partner

who is allowed in the free throw lane
only the shooter is allowed in the free throw lane until the ball is released.
when are free throws called
free throws are shot when a player is fouled in the act of shooting. If they make the shot, they shoot one free throw. if they miss the shot, they shoot the value of the shot that they took.
what happens after 7 team fouls per half?
after the 7th team foul, teams will shoot 1 and 1 free throws on any foul, and after the 10th team foul the opposing team will shoot two free throws. The ball is live after the last 1 and 1 shot is made, and after the second free throw is made respectively.
what happens if a technical foul occurs?
if a tech is administered, any player on the opposing team can shoot 2 free throws. after, the ref must clear the lane and give the ball to the team that just shot the free throw at the division line.

what happens after an intentional or flagrant foul?
the person who got fouled shoots free throws and they get the ball at the spot nearest out of bounds
intentional foul
a foul deliberately committed by a defensive player to stop play. These result in two free throws awarded (three on an unsuccessful three point), and the ball is awarded to the offended team for throw in at the point of interruption.
flagrant foul
a flagrant foul is a personal foul that involves excessive or violent contact that could injure the fouled player. This results in two free throws awarded, and the offended team is awarded the ball for throw in. a flagrant foul carries an automatic ejection.
what does the lead do during a free throw?
- Administers the free throw to the shooter and goes tableside
* 2. Responsible for opposite bottom two lane players and the player nearest on your side
* 3. After free throw is released without any violations, focus on rebounding action on
your side
What does the trail do during a free throw?
- Goes tableside and counts ten (10) seconds (silent count for 10 second violation)
* 2. Responsible for shooter, and opposite top two players in the lane
* 3. Ensure that the shooter and players outside the lane don’t go to rebound before the
ball touches the rim

how does a defensive player obtained legal guarding position?
a defensive player obtains legal guarding position by establishing both feet on the floor in bounds, with both soulders square to the opponent
When are free throws administered?
when a player is fouled in the act of shooting, or after the 7th team foul of the half. If the player missed the shot on which they got fouled, they take the number of free throws equal to the value of the shot. if the player makes the shot, they are awarded 1 free throw no matter the attempted value.
in what situations are bonus free throws administered?
Bonus free throws are administered after the the 7th team foul of the half, when a foul is not committed on a shooter. after the 7th team foul, the team shoots for 1+1, and after the 10th, the team shoots 2.
what does it mean to inbound the ball?
the team that did not score the basket inbounds the ball from the endline where the goal was scored.
when does the ball have to be inbounded vs. when can it be played on the rebound?
the ball is inbounded by the team that did not shoot the free throws if the final free throw was successful. If the final free throw was missed, the ball can be played on the rebound. in the case on a 1+1, the ball is always played on the rebound unless the first shot is made. in that case, a second shot is attempted, which is played on the rebound.
where does the play begin after a timeout?
The team that called the timeout inbounds the ball either at the sideline nearest to where the ball was when the timeout was called, or at the midcourt line.
Who can call a timeout?
only a player on the floor can call a timeout
when can a timeout be called?
a timeout can only be called when the ball is dead or in the possession of the requesting team. ex. after a free throw by the team that is inbounding.
what is legal guarding position?
a defender obtains legal guarding position when they have both feet on the floor facing their opponent with shoulders square. the defender then may move side to side or jump up and down.
what is a screen?
a screen is an offensive manuever, where one player uses their body to stop the movement of an opposing player. a screener must be stationary, and may not stick their arms or legs outside of the frame of their body.
What situations are jump ball situations?
when two players are equally claiming the ball and can’t gain control of the ball. blow your whistle and award the ball to the team with the possession arrow.
In what situations will the clock stop?
if the game is in the last two minutes, the clock will stop during violations, fouls, free throws, out of bounds, time-outs, jump balls, and injury. the clock restarts when the ball has been touched by a player on the court after being inbounded.
is dunking allowed?
yes, during live play only. generally give a warning for players hanging on the rim or dunking during warm-ups/timeouts/half time. if they don’t listen, give them a tech.
what is a backcourt violation?
while in possession of the ball, a player cannot go from their frontcourt into their backcourt.
