A

ANDY NOTE: Not always necessary. But this is where we could add what I might call ‘color commentary’. After some simple answers, we could add a sentence or two reinforcing the issues or adding some interesting fact. When we do this, we put the sentence in italics to indicate it is not the main/ simple answer

Q

What can you do to avoid tailgating?

A

Tailgating is the main reason behind most rear-end collisions. To avoid tailgating one must follow the three-second rule.

  • According to the rule, when the vehicle in front of you passes a fixed point, like a sign, it should take your vehicle about three seconds to reach that same point.

Q

What are the factors on which a driver’s speed depends?

A

Some of the factors on which a driver’s speed depends are:

  • The number and speed of other vehicles on the road,
  • The road surface (smooth, rough, graveled, wet, dry, wide, or narrow),
  • Bicyclists or pedestrians on or crossing the roadway,
  • The weather condition (rainy, foggy, snowing, windy, or dusty).

Q

What are the factors on which a driver’s speed depends?

  • ANDY NOTE: this one is weird to me. Why? Because the biggest factor might be “what does the speed limit sign say?!”*
  • I think what you were trying to ask is something like ‘what factors should compel a driver to adjust their speed from the officially posted speed limit?’*
A

Factors which should compel a driver to adjust their speed (from the official speed limit) include:

  • The number and speed of other vehicles on the road,
  • The road surface (smooth, rough, graveled, wet, dry, wide, or narrow),
  • Bicyclists or pedestrians on or crossing the roadway,
  • The weather condition (rainy, foggy, snowing, windy, or dusty).

Q

What is the speed limit for a motorist who is driving within 500 feet to 1,000 feet of a school while children are outside or crossing the street?

ANDY NOTE: I need to trust that you are following the official laws for the state in question, of course. But this answer makes me wonder because in my experience in MOST states, the laws about school zone driving speed are determined by HOURS OF THE DAY, not whether the driver sees children or not. Most of the time, the signs say; ‘speed limit 25 MPH between 8 am and 4 pm’ or something like that. But Califormnia could be different and this could be accurate.

A

When driving within 500-1000 feet of a school with children in view:

  • the speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted.
  • Some school zones may post speed limits as low as 15 mph.

Q

While driving, if a motorist sees this sign on the roadway, what should they do?

A

Seeing this sign, the motorist should be aware for possible animals in or near the roadway and proceed with caution at a slow speed.

Denise note: I think that we should make it a goal to provide the answer in the fewest number of words. For example: Proceed with caution, slow speed, and be aware of possible animals in or near the roadway.

What are the solid lines and broken white lines on the roads meant for?

A

The solid white lines on the road are meant to separate lanes in the same direction. One cannot cross a solid white line, but a vehicle can cautiously cross the lane through a broken white line by making sure there is no oncoming traffic.
