What was the role of Cecil Rhodes
A
- annexed territory around Zambezi river -> brought large area of land under British control -> was called Rhodesia from 1895.
- forced tribes out of their land to make room for industrial development.
- key colonial administrator in S Africa -> Cape colony PM from 1890-96.
- Formed own company -> BSAC -> got a charter in 1889.
- Invested in fruits growing in the Cape from the 1880s which began the modern-day fruit industry.

What was the role of William Mackinnon
A
- self-made ship-owner and businessman from Scotland.
- He established British control in East Africa by founding the Imperial British East Africa Company, which was given a charter in 1888, with a view to opening up new markets.
- founded the British India Steam Navigation Company – a very large trading business in the Indian Ocean (especially in Zanzibar).

What was the role of George Goldie
A
- formed the Central African Trading Company in 1876.
- united trading firms on the Niger River by securing over 450 local treaties to create a single company (United African Company).
-> charter granted and became the Royal Niger Company in 1886. - established coffee and cocoa plantations and traded palm oil and kernels.
