Q

What is the effect of Tourists going overseas for party trips

A

Businesses start changing to serve the tourists (e.g. charging higher prices, opening lots of bars instead of other shops, increase in social issues like public drunkenness, crime rates increase). This not only causes problems for this place for future tourists but especially for families who already lived there.

Q

Whats the effect Large festivals (music festivals etc).

A

Significant issues with litter and sewage (garbage collection and sewer pipes not equipped to handle such a sudden increase in arrivals)
Effects are short term (“seasonal”), so the locals need to make enough money to last a long time (and pay for the clean-up…).

Q

What is the effect of large numbers of people start going to a place, large companies want a share of the money they bring. So they build hotels and hire cheap local workers.

A

The hotel doesn’t pay to fix everything damaged by the tourists (e.g. destroyed beaches), they just collect the money and move it overseas (meaning the local area suffers while the large company profits).

Q

How is venice an example of the effects of travel and tourism

A

With only 60000 locals and 22million tourists going there eevry year venic has had many negative effects of travel including

Businesses and goverment only care aout making the toursists haooy scince they overun the city it makes everday life miserable for the toursits

This has then increased the price of living, scince tourists dont know any better they will usally just pay the price, but this is too high for the locals driving many out of there home

And finally tourists leave rubish and litter everywhere ruining the canals and beauty of venice

17
Q

How are people trying to do to stop the negative effects travel has on venice

A

Locals have worked out that charging tourists more for everyday items but charging locals a cheaper price allows them to keep paying rent in their own city however this is illegal

The “detourism act” Pushes and ecourgages tourists to come at the less popular times to visit during the year and gives them helpful advice on how to be a good tourists

Tourists have been encouraged to reuse there plastic waterbottles insted of dumping them in the canals so theres lots of places to refill them
