Traction Principals Flashcards
What are the signs/symptoms of Nerve root compression
Pain/paresthesiae below knee
myotome/reflex changes
Not responsive to specific exercise or active movement (no centralization)
What are the theoretical effects of spine traction?
Joint distraction soft tissue stretch muscle relaxation joint mobilization Reduce HNP/disc bulges-protrusions
What are the indications for traction?
Radiculopathy from HNP, disc buldge IVF narrowing Osteophyte encroachment spondylolisthesis DJD
What are the contraindication for spinal traction?
Systemic disease affecting spine integrity (RA) Fx, subluxation, dislocation Hypermobility or instability hiatial or abdominal hernia spinal cord compression (cauda equina) Pregnancy (lumbar traction) Vertebral artery occlusion (cervical) Aortic aneurysm TMJ/TMD Uncontrolled HTN (inversion)
What are the precautions for Lumbar traction?
acute cervical/lumbar pain claustrophobia mental disorientation/confusion Children, frail, elderly hx of surgery to spine hyperactivity or restlessness obesity respiratory challenges CV problems Hx of domestic violence (cervical)
What are the two types of traction?
Sustained or intermittent
What are the 4 types of traction methods?
Mechanical
Manual
Positional
Inversion
What degree should the LE be to target L5-S1 for traction?
45-60 degrees
What degree should the LE be to target L4-L5 for traction?
60-75 degrees
What degree should the LE be to target L3-L4 for traction?
75-90 degrees
