Tracheostomy Flashcards
What is a tracheostomy
A surgical opening into the trachea below the
vocal cords
What does a tracheostomy do
Provides an alternate airway bypassing the
upper airway
What are the 6 indications for a tracheostomy
- Difficult intubations
- Larynx tumors
- Prolonged mechanical ventilation (longer than 3 weeks)
- Unable to pass an endotracheal tube (establish an airway)
- Subglottic stenosis
- Vocal cord paralysis
what 3 immediate complications can happen after a tracheostomy
- pneumothorax
- subcutaneous emphysema
- Air embolism
What 4 late complications can happen after a tracheostomy
- Hemorrhage
- Infection
- Obstruction
- Tracheal-Esophageal Fistula
What can be used to secure a trach tube
Trach ties
What kind of trach allows upper airway
breathing to occur
Fenestrated trach
What kind of trach uses auxiliary airflow to put air above cuff so patient can speak with cuff inflated and is used during mechanical ventilation
Vocalaid trach
What is a complication a vocalaid trach can cause
mucosal drying and irritation
A one way valve provides low resistant one-way airflow using a
thin silicone diaphragm that opens on inspiration and closes
on expiration.
Mongomery speaking valve
What provides a better more effective cough, restores positive subglottic air pressure, and restore pharyngeal and laryngeal sensation
A closed respiratory system
What method allows the patient to breath around the trach tube and speak
Plugging method
