Trachea and Bronchi Flashcards
1
Q
What does cartilage do?
A
- for support
- keeps trachea and bronchus open
2
Q
What does smooth muscle do?
A
makes dilate and constrict to control airflow
eg dilates during excersise
3
Q
What does elastic fibres do?
A
allows stretch so doesnt burst and recoil which helps expell air out of lungs
4
Q
What does goblet cells do?
A
secrete mucus which traps bacteria and stops reaching lungs
5
Q
What does ciliated epithelium do?
A
wafts mucus away from lungs and it ends up going down throat and gets digested in stomach
6
Q
Properties of Trachea
A
- C shape cartilage to allow it to fit close to oesophagus and so food can move down oesophagus
- smooth muscle
- elastic fibres
- goblet cells
- ciliated epithelium
7
Q
Properties of Bronchus
A
- complete ring of cartilage
- smooth muscle
- elastic fibres
- goblet cells
- ciliated epithelium
8
Q
Properties of Bronchiole
A
- NO Cartilage
- smooth muscle
- elastic fibres
- goblet cells
- ciliated epithelium
9
Q
Why do bronchioles not have cartilage?
A
as small enough to support themselves
