Trach Flashcards
what helps to reduce suction-induced hypoxemia?
pre-oxygenation and deep breathing
do all patients need per oxygenation?
not unless hypoxemic before suctioning
what are some tracheal suctioning risks?
hypoxemia often leading to cardiac dysrthmias, larygenal spasm, bradycardia (vagus nerve)
are trachs temp or permanent?
either or
tracks are placed in patients who require long-term airway mgmt bc?
airway obstr, airway clearance needs, and long-term intubation
what is the purpose of a cuff on a tracheal tube?
prevent the escape of air between the rube and the walls of the trachea and reduces aspiratin when pt is receiving ventilation
what are the goals of inflating the cuff on an artificial airway?
promote lung inflation for mech ventilation, prevent aspiration of gastric contents and also allow drainage of secretions that accumulate between the glottis and the cuff
what do you want to maintain the cuff pressures at?
20-25mmHg or less
what are some indications for cuff inflation?
o Mechanical ventilation:
• Continuous airway pressure
• Positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP)
• Inability to meet ventilator requirements with cuff down
• Inability to meet oxygen requirements with cuff down
o Risk of Aspirating Gastric Contents
• Feedin tube, especially large bore, in stomach
• GERD
• Hiatal hernia
• During and after meals
• Impaired gastric emptying
• Decreased gag reflex
• Impaired swallowing
patients with an artificial airway require what to the airway?
thumdification bc it bypasses the normal filtering and humidification process o the nose and mouth
what are the 2 devices that supply humidified air to artificial airway?
T tube and trach collar
