[Tr] Static Electricity Flashcards
What charge does an electron have?
Negative charge (-1)
What charge does a proton have?
Positive charge (+1)
If an object gains electrons, what charge does the object have?
The object has a negative charge.
What happens if two objects have the same charge?
The objects repel from each other
Why don’t protons transfer to other objects?
Protons are on the inside of the atom, making it harder for them to move. Unlike electrons that are found on the outside.
What is earthing?
Earthing is the process of electrons transferring from one object to another to make it neutral. Electrons will usually jump to the ground, also known as earth.
How does a Van Der Graff machine work?
A Van Der Graff machine works by turning a belt inside of it causing friction. This friction transfers electrons onto the conductor on top. This gives the conductor a negative charge.
What is an electroscope?
An electroscope is a scientific instrument used to measure the relative field strength of an electric charge.
What is an insulator?
An insulator is an object that doesn’t allow electricity to pass easily through itself (e.g nylon carpet)
What is a conductor?
A conductor allows the transfer of electricity easily (e.g metal)
How is static electricity used in car spray paint?
If the paint is electrostatically charged as it comes out the sprayer allows it to be spread evenly over the car. Alongside this, the paint will be attracted to the metal car, and it will also stick to the car’s body. This means the paint job will be smooth as well.
Why are droplets of insecticides given the same charge as they are spread over fields?
Droplets are given the same charge to ensure they repel from each other and ensure an even coating of the field to prevent some crops from being missed.
How is lightning formed?
As bits of ice and water are swirled inside the cloud, the force of friction causes electrons to be built up. The charge ends up in a different part of the cloud, usually having one side with electrons (negative charge) and the other with protons (positive charge) If this charge builds up a lot, electrons may flow through the air. This can be seen as lighting.
What is a bonding line?
A bonding line is attached to a plane whilst it is being fueled. The bonding line earths any electrons that may have built up in the flight or during the fuel truck being driven. It is important these electrons are grounded, or else a spark may happen to cause the fuel vapour to ignite and cause a fire.
What 3 things are needed to draw electric fields?
The charge point (Including the +/-), charge direction, and field lines.
