What is imperialism?
The policy of extending a country’s power beyond its own borders by acquiring total control over another region.
Empire:
A group of countries ruled over by a leader.
Colonization:
The process of establishing control over people in an area.
Colony:
A group of people who settle in a new place but keep ties to their homeland.
What year did old imperialism start and end?
. Late 1400’s – Early 1800’s
What was the goal of the old imperialism?
To find trade routes and set up trading posts
What year did new imperialism start and end?
Late 1800’s – Early 1900’s
What was the goal of the new imperialism?
To build vast empires based on economic, military, political, religious and social reasons.
