Toxicology Flashcards
Why can paracetamol be toxic to the body?
Paracetamol metabolite causes hepatotoxicity
- N-acetyl benzoquinone imine
Why is methanol toxic to the body?
Alcohol dehydrogenase converts methanol into formic acid - causing acidosis and inhibiting mitochondrial respiration.
How can you treat methanol poisoning?
Ethanol competitively inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase (can’t convert methanol to formic acid).
How can you treat paracetamol toxicity?
Treat with N-acetyl cysteine.
How can you treat opioid toxicity?
Opioids exert toxicity through agonism at opioid receptors.
Naloxone antagonises opioid receptors, displacing opioid agonists.
How can you treat metal poisoning?
Use of chelation.
Succimer is used, it binds to metals through -SH groups.
How can you treat acetylcholinesterase inhibitor poisioning?
Atropine blocks muscarinic receptors to prevent effects.
How can you treat animal poisons?
Antibodies against these venoms
