What was the Treaty of Versailles?
The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after World War One had ended in 1918 and in the shadow of the Russian Revolution and other events in Russia. The treaty was signed at the vast Versailles Palace near Paris – hence its title – between Germany and the Allies. The three most important politicians there were David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau and Woodrow Wilson.
Where was Versailles?
Just outside Paris.
What triggered the war?
The death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Who was blamed and what was one of the punishment?
Germany had to accept responsibility for starting the war, and had to agree to pay for the cost of the damage (set at £6.6 billion in 1921).
Who were the three most important politicians?
The three most important politicians there were David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau and Woodrow Wilson.
Where was German troops not allowed to go to?
No German troops were allowed in the Rhineland, the area of Germany closest to France.
What was Germany not allowed to do?
The Treaty of Versailles was a “dictated peace” as Germany was not allowed to negotiate(disobey) the terms.
What problems were caused to Germany when they signed the Treaty?
Germany’s army was reduced to 100,000 men. Germany’s navy had to be handed over to the victorious Allies, and Germany was not allowed to manufacture war planes or tanks in the future.
What two lands were given back to France?
France was given back Alsace and Lorraine after Germany took it.
What was Wilson’s aims?
To end war by creating a League of Nations based on his Fourteen Points, to ensure Germany was not destroyed and not to blame Germany for the war - he hated the Guilt Clause.
What was Clemenceau’s aims?
Revenge and to punish Germany, to return Alsace-Lorraine to France, no League of Nations, an independent Rhineland, huge reparations and to disband the German army so that Germany would never be strong enough to attack France again.
What was Lloyd George’s aims?
A ‘just’ peace that would be tough enough to please the electors who wanted to ‘make Germany pay’, but would leave Germany strong enough to trade, land for Britain’s empire and to safeguard Britain’s naval supremacy.
How many sections was the Treaty divided and what were the names of the sections?
The Treaty was divided into 4 different section: Territorial, Military, Financial and General.
What choices did Germany have?
Either sign the Treaty or be invaded by the Allies.
