Tov Flashcards
1
Q
Was the war guilt clause justified?
A
- Germany bore sole responsibility for causing the war
-unjustified. Unfair to blame one part for the cause of the war as the causes were complex ( such as the alliance system and arms race which all countries participated in)
2
Q
Was the territorial reductions justified?
A
- loss of territories like Saar, East Prussia (13% of land) and all overseas colonies
- unjustified. Many Germans living outside German speaking people in territories in the neighbouring countries, such as Czechoslovakia, could not join Germany. This made the Germans feel that “self-determination” only applied to the winners of the war
- can be justified. However, for they imposed the same on Russia when Russia pulled out of the war in 1918 in the treaty of Brest-Litvosk
3
Q
Were the reparations justified?
A
- 269 Bilion gold Reichmarks
- loss of territories rich in natural resources made it worse as Germany did not have enough workers with 15% male population lost in WW1. Therefore, Germany found it difficult to pay reparations on time.
- Unjustified. This was an unrealistic figure, was heavy & impossible to pay.
4
Q
Was the disarmament justified?
A
- Rhineland was demilitarised
- not allowed to have navy or air force
- conscription was forbidden
- *Unjustified. 100,000 soldiers were impossible to maintain law & order in the country
- French invaded the Ruhr and they could not be stopped
- the chaos and instability within Germany partly the reason for the rise for the Nazi party later.*
