Tourniquet Flashcards
What should be done if direct pressure does not control extremity bleeding?
Use a tourniquet
A tourniquet is only useful if there is substantial bleeding from an extremity injury.
What is the first step to take when applying a tourniquet?
Follow standard precautions
Standard precautions include safety measures to protect both the patient and the responder.
Where should the tourniquet be placed in relation to the bleeding site?
High and tight, proximal to the bleeding site
In the axillary region for upper extremity injuries and at the groin for lower extremity injuries.
What action should be taken after placing the tourniquet around the extremity?
Click the buckle into place and pull the strap tight
How should the tightening dial or windlass be turned?
Clockwise until pulses are no longer palpable or until bleeding is controlled
When should a tourniquet be released after application?
Only if instructed to do so by medical control
What should be avoided when applying a tourniquet?
Applying it directly over any joint
What should be done if the first tourniquet does not control bleeding?
Apply a second tourniquet adjacent to the first
What material should never be used for a tourniquet?
Wire, rope, a belt, or any narrow material that could cut into the skin
What precaution can be taken to protect the skin while applying a tourniquet?

Loosen it, unless directed to do so by medical control
What information should be communicated to hospital personnel upon arrival?
The exact time the tourniquet was applied, the site of application, and the rationale for application
