preservation of local customs and heritage -> revenue from tourism used to preserve iconic landmarks such as AngKot Wat
Disadvantages of socio- economic cultural impacts
dilution of local customs and heritage, increased crime rate–> Louvre Museum, Paris, France ( pickpockets)
How are local customs diluted
older buildings covert into places of residents for tourists
cultural festivals and rituals decreased in duration to fit tourist’s expectations
What are the positive environmental impacts
conservation of natural environments
eg: In Kenya, revenue from tourism is used to preserve habitats , US $7,000/yr for a lion and US $ 600,000/yr for a elephant

Littering and pollution - Waste left behind by tourists
Destruction of habitats- tourists trampling on plants, Red Sea Coast, Egypt–> diving and snorkelling, sea shells collected, carbon footprint, increased congestion

Water, electricity etc, diverted to tourists instead of locals, local cultures not respected
