People who travel to or stay in places outside their usual environment for more than 24 hours, but not more than one consecutive year.
Define tourism
Tourism refers to the activities of tourists and the supporting activities and infrastructure such as air transport, airports and hotels that are used by tourists.
What are the two types of tourism
Domestic and international
What is domestic tourism
Domestic tourism refers to tourism within a tourists own country.
Example of domestic tourism
Leaving your home in Geelong and staying in the Gold Coast for a week
Example of international tourism
If you left Australia and visited figi for a week

Expansion of tourism industry both in Australia and globally
EXPLANATION:
- the tourist industry and tourist numbers have increased dramatically over the last two decades both in Australia and through the the world
- technology advancements have made it easier, faster and cheaper for people to travel within and between countries
- more people are travelling to and from Asia in 1970
EXAMPLE:
- tourism numbers have increased from less than 1 million in 1975 to 7.4 million in 2014
- tourism industry in Australia is now valued at just under 50 billion dollars
- international tourist arrivals have increased by 39% since 2000
- tourism is spreading outside of America and Europe with China becoming a popular destination
Tourism in Australia and Overseas is increasing in regional and remote areas from major cities and tourist hotspots
EXPLANATION:
- as tourist numbers continue to increase people are searching for new and exciting locations that offer different experience for travelllers
- advances in transport have opened up new locations and increased the accessibility of remote and regional areas both in Australia and globally.
EXAMPLE:
- Australia is renown for its natural wonders and beautiful beaches. These are generally located in remote and regional areas which has facilitated tourism in these regions. Examples include the Great Barrier Reef, Bungle Bungles, and Shark Bay
- the Kwinana freeway has increased numbers of both international and domestic tourists to South West of Western Australia
Changing locations of tourism
EXPLANATION:
- tourism has rapidly spread into new locations throughout the world during the twenty first century
- this has been facilitated through technology advancements to enable increased accessibility but also greater awareness of smaller countries through social media and the internet
EXAMPLES:
- Asia and pacific had only very small importance as tourists destinations in 1950. In 2016 however, every fourth tourist arrived in the region
- one of the top global surf destinations is called skeleton bay on the Namibia coast of Africa. 10 years ago no one was travelling or surfing in this location.
Changing demographics of international tourism
EXPLANATION:
- the demographics or home countries that tourist are travelling from has been changing over the last 20 years.
- although Europe and America is still a strong source of tourists, China and Asia is becoming a leading outbound location
EXAMPLE:
- China has now become the second largest market of incoming Australia. Tourist with arrivals exploding from 500 in 1976 to 1.2 million in 2016
- South Korea and India have now moved into the top 10 source. Countries for Australia
- on a global scale the Asia Pacific region was the second biggest home location for international tourists.
