Describe the nature, spatial patterns and future directions of one economic activity in a global context.
A
NATURE
- tourism is the movement of people from one place to another, generally for work or leisure/education, can also be for religious (pilgrimage) or health reasons.
- domestic tourism: within country.
- international tourism: to another country.
- generally middle to high class are tourists.
- as many as 850 million tourists travel each year.
- tourism is a vast ranging industry that covers virtually all sectors of economy: transport, information, commercial, industrial/manufacturing, hospitality, the government etc.
- 3.6% of the world’s GDP
- 2.8% of all employment
- one of five top export earners for 83% of countries
- accounts for 6% of worldwide exports of goods and services
- in 2005, Europe earned a total of US$347.4 million
- in 2004, Australia was ranked the top tenth tourism earner at US$13 billion. The top earners were the USA (74.5), Spain (45.2) and France (40.8).
- by 2004, the top tourism spenders were Germany (71.0), the USA (65.6) and United Kingdom (55.9).
SPATIAL PATTERNS
- most tourists travel to Europe, the Americas and east Asia-Pacific, generally places with good security and affordability.
- 10 mil+ : Japan to USA, Europe and SE Asia; USA to S. America; USA to UK and vice versa; Europe to Rome
- In 2005 the top destinations for Australian tourists were: NZ, USA, UK, Indonesia and China.
