What is the Butler Model?
A model describing the life cycle of tourist destinations in six stages: Exploration, Involvement, Development, Consolidation, Stagnation, and either Decline or Rejuvenation.
What happens during the exploration stage of the Butler Model?
Small numbers of tourists visit based on natural or cultural attractions.
What happens during the development stage of the Butler Model?
Tourist facilities are built, and the number of tourists grows, often exceeding the local population during peak times.
What occurs in the stagnation stage of the Butler Model?
Visitor numbers peak, the destination becomes less fashionable, and environmental/social problems emerge.
What are the two possible outcomes after stagnation in the Butler Model?
Either the destination rejuvenates with new attractions and investments, or it declines as tourists leave for newer destinations.
How has tourism changed globally between 1950 and 2018?
Tourist arrivals have shifted, with different regions rising as top destinations.
Why is it important to categorize tourism?
