What is tourism?
Tourism is an industry that provides services to
people who travel and visit places while on holiday
for business or pleasure.
Who is a tourist?
A tourist is a person who travels to and stays in a
place outside his/her usual environment for more
than 24 hours but less than a year for leisure,
business or other purposes.
What can it be considered as?
Tourism can be domestic (a “staycation”) or
international.
How is tourism related to economic activity?
Tourism is a tertiary economic activity or service
industry that generates billions of dollars annually.
Tourism also supports secondary industries – for
instance those who produce local crafts, furnishings
or food. It also supports primary industries such as
fishing and agriculture.
Climate
The Caribbean has a tropical climate and is warm throughout the year. The warm climate appeals to people from temperate countries, such as North America. This is why
the high-season or on-season of tourism in the Caribbean coincides with North America’s
winter season – ie, from mid-December to mid- April when prices for hotel accommodations
are usually quite high during this period.

countries have developed their infrastructure so that there are proper airports to facilitate
major airlines and ports to facilitate cruise ships. This means that many airlines fly from the major cities. Cruise ships from North America and
Europe also call at many Caribbean islands.
