TORCH Infections Flashcards
Toxoplasmosis maternal symptoms
asymptomatic
fatigue, fever, HA, malaise myalgia, lymphadenopathy
Toxoplasmosis fetal symptoms
chorioretinitis hydrocephalus intracranial calcifications learning disabilities vision abnormalities
Toxoplasmosis transmission
touching mouth after changing cat litter
contaminated soil
undercooked meat
unfiltered water
Other (syphilis) newborn symptoms
nasal discharge (bloody/white) snuffles hepatomegaly rashes lymphadenopathy seizures hydrocephalus hematologic abnormalities long bone abnormalities of development
Other (syphilis) toddler symptoms
frontal bossing saddle nose short maxilla protuberant mandible ocular/vision abnormalities abnormal tooth development fissures around mouth intellectual disability arthritis/joint abnormalities
Other (syphilis) transmission
treponema pallidum (spirochete crosses placenta or transmits during delivery)
mostly occurs in mothers w/little PNC
Rubella maternal effects
increased rates of fetal death, prematurity, impaired growth, LBW
Rubella fetal/child effects
permanent hearing impairment congenital heart defects microcephaly cataracts hepatosplenomegaly intellectual disability diabetes thyroid dysfunction encephalitis bone lesions meningoencephalitis purpura/petechiae (blueberry muffin rash)
Rubella transmission
lack of maternal immunity
maternal infection–>hematogenous spread–>placental infection–>spread to fetal vasculature
CMV maternal symptoms
mono-like infection (fever, rhinitis, pharyngitis, myalgia, HA, fatigue)
asymptomatic
CMV fetal symptoms
sensory-hearing loss, vision impairment due to chorioretinitis
neurologic-microcephaly, seizures, feeding difficulties
other-hepatosplenomegaly, jaundice, petechiae/purpura
CMV transmission
viral infection (congenital)
transmitted via placenta
primary infection w/highest risk
Herpes simplex virus maternal symptoms
genital–ulcers, fever, lymphadenopathy, fever, dysuria, HA
Herpes simplex virus fetal symptoms
rare to have intrauterine disease, but severe
placental infarcts inflammation of umbilical cord fetal demise skin abnormalities (skin vesicles, ulceration, scarring) ocular damage severe CNS deformities (microcephaly)
Herpes simplex virus neonate symptoms
skin/eye/mouth manifestations (SEM)
vesicles on erythematous base
ocular infection
ulcerations of mouth, throat, palate, tongue
