What do you consider torch for?

A

IUGR, Microcephaly, intracranial calcifications, hearing loss, seizures, cataracts

Herpes

A

early in pregnancy = loss of pregnancy

late in pregnancy = IUGR

Babies can develop severe CNS and organ damage

A

hydrocephalus, intracranial calcifications, chorioretinitis (inflamed lining of retina)

Cytomegalovirus

A

Most com congenital infection in developed world.

IUGR, cerebral calcifications, hearing loss, seizures, neonatal jaundice and petechiae (red rash under skin), hepatospeenomegaly, thick placenta, ascites/edema

1/200 babies born with CMV and 1/5 have symptoms

Syphilis

A

**only TORCH where babies are sympomatic at birth.

snuffles, hutchinson teeth, saber shins, saddle nose

Titer results

A

IgM antibodies indicates recent infection, there is a risk to baby because recent infection could have been during pregnancy.

IgG antibodies (G ghost from past) indicates past infection or vaccination likely before pregnancy.
