Topics 1.1-1.3 Flashcards
Hectare to acres
1 ha = 2.5 acres
Symbiotic relationships
The two species are living in close association with one another, not necessarily positive or negative
Types of resource partitioning
1) Temporal resource partitioning
2) Spatial resource partitioning
3) Morphological resource partitioning
What is spatial resource partitioning?
Reduction of competition by using different habitats
What is temporal resource partitioning?
Two species use the same resource at different times
What is morphological resource partitioning?
Evolution of differences in body size or shape
What are biomes defined by?
Precipitation and temperature
Which of the three have nutrient-rich soil and what does it do for the living organisms of the biome?
1.) Tropical rainforest
2.) Boreal forest
3.) Temperate forest
Temperate forest. Has nutrient rich soil with lots of dead organic matter, leaves, and warm temperature for decomposers.
What causes biomes to shift locations?
Climate changes
Describe a wetland.
An area where soil is submerged/saturated in water for at least part of the year, but shallow enough for emergent plants. High plant growth, extremely beneficial b/c stores water.
Describe rivers and lakes.
Rivers = Have high oxygen due to flow mixing water and air, carries nutrient-rich sediments.
Lakes = standing bodies of fresh water
Describe estuaries.
Areas where rivers empty into the ocean, contains a mix of fresh and salt water, requiring adaptive species.
Describe coral reefs.
Warm shallow waters beyond the shoreline; most diverse marine biome.
What sort of relationship exists within the coral reefs? Explain and describe.
Coral and algae – coral take carbon dioxide out of the ocean to make calcium carbonate (the reef) & give to algae, while algae provide sugar to the coral through photosynthesis
Describe intertidal zones.
Narrow band of coastline between high and low tide. Species must be adaptive to prevent drying out.
