Local
From, existing in, or serving a particular place or small area
Ex.: Our children all go to the local school
Resident
A person who lives or has their home in a place
Ex.: The local residents were angry at the lack of parking spaces
Pedestrian
A person who is walking, especially in an area where vehicles go
Ex.: A few pedestrians sheltered from the rain in doorways
Community
The people living in one particular area
Ex.: He’s well known in the local community
Crosswalk
A place on a road at which vehicles must stop to allow people to walk across the road
Ex.: The wide intersection of the two thoroughfares has historically been the site of numerous traffic accidents and pedestrian casualties, partly due to the long crosswalks
Pavement BrE/Sidewalk AmE
A path with a hard surface on one or both sides of a road, that people walk on
Ex.: A few people were milling about on the dark sidewalk outside the shop, but the shop itself was empty
Subway AmE/Tube BrE
A railway system in which electric trains travel through tunnels below ground
Ex.: We took the subway uptown to Yankee Stadium
Downtown AmE/City centre BrE
In or to the central part of a city
Ex.: I work downtown, but I live in the suburbs
Uptown AmE
In or towards the northern part of a city or town, especially if there is not much business or industry there
Ex.: I can get lunch in Chinatown for half of what it costs uptown
District
An area of a country or town that has fixed borders that are used for official purposes
Ex.: Villaverde is one of the high-rise districts that encircle Madrid
Suburb
An area on the edge of a large town or city where people who work in the town or city often live Ex.: We drove from middle-class suburbs to a very poor inner-city area
Outskirts
The areas that form the edge of a town
Ex.: The factory is in the outskirts of our city
To be a centre for sth
An area, city, or country which is known for a particular business or activity and where a lot of business, etc. takes place
Ex.: Centre for sth Hong Kong has long been recognized as a centre for the production of jade jewellery
To be home to sth
To be someone’s or something’s place of origin.
Ex.: This building always has been home to National Bank.
to provide recreation
To give something to a person, company, or organization, or to make it available for them to enterntain themselves
Ex.: This park provides recreation for whole neighbourhood.
Landmark
A building or place that is easily recognized
Ex.: The Rock of Gibraltar is one of Europe’s most famous landmarks
Shopping centre BrE/Shopping center AmE
A group of shops with a common area for cars to park
Ex.: In the shopping centre, businesses struggle to survive and frequently fail.
Spectacular natural surroundings
Especially great, not artificial surroundings.
Ex.: I heard this place is famous with its spectacular natural surroundings.
To be alive with
To be full of things that are living and moving
Ex.; City center is alive with grey suited people
Rural
In, of, or like the countryside
Ex.: The area is still very rural and undeveloped.
Urban
Of or in a city or town
Ex.: Pollution has reached disturbingly high levels in some urban areas
To be the hub of
To be the central or main part of something where there is most activity
Ex.: The City of London is the hub of the UK’s financial world
Public telephone
A phone which is available for everyone to use
Ex.: He went out to make a call using public telephone
Neighbourhood
The area of a town that surrounds someone’s home, or the people who live in this area
Ex.: They live in a poor neighbourhood
