What are the important major steps that you as Master must take in the event of any emergency onboard ship?
A
In General
Actions will specifically depend on type of emergency. The following are the main
steps required in any emergency scenario:
Immediate actions:
1. Master takes the con.
2. Follow emergency procedure as per company emergency procedure manual, which should include:
a) Sounding the general alarm.
b) Stop Engines.
c) Announce by PA.
d) Head count, check for casualties
e) Establish communications.
f) *Close watertight doors.
- Activate SOPEP and take preventive actions in case of any oil pollution
- Use your chief officer and chief engineer to investigate and report.
- Once you have a report, devise a plan as to hiow to deal with the emergency.
- Obtain following information from emergency teams:
- Try to minimize immediate danger such as fire, sinking,
pollution, etc.
a) Details casualties.
b) Any fire risk
- c) Any other information regarding associate
problems.
7.Try to minimize immediate danger such as fire, sinking,
pollution, etc. - On the bridge, the command team will do the followings:
a. Maintain VHF watch.
b. Keep a record of happenings.
c. Infirm the designated person ashore.
d. Exhibit light / shapes and any appropriate sound signals.
e. Switch on deck lighting at night.
f. Determine the vessel’s position.
g. Broadcast urgency or distress massage as required
h. Inform the accident with positions and time to the following parties:
I. Local authorities.
II. Owners, charterers.
III. P & I club
And at a later stage: - Make a casualty report to SAMSA.
- Make official logbook entries.
