What is primary data?
Information which is directly collected by the researcher.
What is secondary data?
Information that has been collected by previous researchers. It is free and easy to use due to being accessed via the internet.
What type of data is in numerical form?
Quantitative data
What is qualitative data?
Data which is collected through observations and is typically more wordy.
Who believes sociology is a science, prefers quantitative data, is scientific and likes experiments?
Positivists
What do Interpretivists believe?
Sociology is not scientific, they like data that gives them deeper understanding and they enjoy qualitative data.
What is Validity?
The level of ruthless in which your data follows. Genuine and true data.
What is reliability?
How easy your method is to repeat. Will someone else be able to repeat your method.
Define representativeness
The generalisation of a society, and how data represents the wider society.
What is a sample?
A subset of the population being studied.
What type of sampling is the stratification or division of a population into smaller sub groups?
Stratified sampling
What is quasi- random sampling?
Choosing a nth person of the sample frame.
What are ethical issues?
Informed consent, confidentiality and privacy and harm to precipitants.
Define objective
When data is factual and includes statistics.
what is subjective?
The measure of social standings within a community or society.
