Topic - Mixtures Flashcards
Give examples of mixtures?
Paint,Drinks,Food, Air, Seawater
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances or chemicals that have been mixed together.
Can you separate a mixture?
YES.
What is a substance that can be dissolved?
A Soluble
Give an example of a soluble?
SUGAR.
What is a substance that does not dissolve?
INSOLUBLE
When things mix really well
For example : Sugar and Water
What is this mixture known as?
A Solution.
What is a solute?
A substance that dissolves?
Eg Sugar
What is a solvent?
A substance that dissolves the solute.
Eg: Water
When you release a soft drink lid, what gas bubbles to the surface?
Carbon Dioxide Gas
Give an example of a solid dissolved in liquid?
Sugar dissolved in Water
Give an example of a liquid dissolved in another liquid?
Detergent dissolved in water.
Give an example of a gas dissolved in liquid?
Oxygen gas dissolved in water.
Give an example of a gas dissolved in another gas?
Water vapour dissolved in air gases
What is an Aqueous Solution ?
It is a solution that has water as it’s solvent.
What is the name of the solution that has water as it’s solvent?
Aqueous Solution
Will water dissolve detergent?
YES.
Will water dissolve oil?
NO.
Will grease dissolve in water?
NO.
Are solutions transparent?(see through)?
YES.
What does a transparent solution mean?
You can see through it
How do you know when a solution has been formed?
You can see through it.
Can solutions be colourless?
YES.
Can solutions be coloured?
YES.
Give two types of a solution and give an example?
Solid dissolved in liquid.
Example :sugar dissolved in water.
Liquid dissolved in another liquid.
Example :detergent dissolved in water
Are colourless And clear solutions the same?
NO.
What does colourless mean?
It is not coloured.
Define the term ‘concentrated solution’
It’s when a lot of solute is dissolved in the solvent.
Is a solution with little solute in the solution a concentrated or dilute solution?
A Dilute solution.
If a cup of tea had four spoonful of sugar, would it be a dilute solution or concentrated solution?
Concentrated.
Imagine if you had a glass of water and kept adding spoonfuls of salt and stirring each time. You would find the salt would eventually stop dissolving. When a substance no longer dissolves in the solvent what is it said to be?
Saturated
When undissolved solute falls to the bottom what does it become?
A Sediment.
Does sand dissolve when mixed with water?
NO.
What type of mixture is called a suspension?
When a solute stays solid and spreads through the water or solvent.
Why would sand not dissolve but sink to the bottom?
Because it’s to heavy and large to stay in suspension.
Another EG:dust in the air eventually drops and settles on the floor.
A type of mixture in which one substance does not dissolve in another but quickly spreads out to form a sediment…..what is the correct name for this mixture?
A saturated mixture.
A clear mixture in which a substance dissolves in another?
A soluble.
Is dust in the air a solution or suspension?
A suspension
Is cordial in water a solution or suspension?
Solution.
Identify a solvent that will dissolve
A. Sugar
B. Grease
Sugar
A chef dissolved salt in boiling water that he was going to cook pasta in. Identify whether the salt, water or salty water was the
A.Solute
B.sovent
C.Aqueous solution
Aqueous Solution.
