Topic- Fuels and Earth science Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon only
What is a crude oil?
A mixture of hydrocarbons in which carbon atoms are in chains or rings.
How does fractional distillation work?
1) Crude oil heated to about 350 degrees celcius and is all vapourized
2) As it rises through the chambers of the fractionating column, it begins to cool and the longest molecules condense
3) This process is repeated until the vapours reach the top of the column
What fuel is condensed at 150 degrees celsius? What is it used for?
Gasoline (Petrol)
- fuel for cars
What fuel is condensed at 370 degrees celsius? What is it used for?
Industrial fuel oil
- Fuel for ships and power stations
What fuel is condensed at 200 degrees celsius? What is it used for?
Kerosene
- Fuel for aircrafts
What fuel is condensed at 300 degrees celsius? What is it used for?
Diesel
- Fuel for trains and cars
What remains as vapour at 20 degrees celsius? What is it used for?
Petroleum
- Domestic heating and cooking
