Frontline duties
in relation to policing, frontline staff are directly involved in the public crime - fighting face of the force. this includes neighbourhood policing, response policing and criminal investigation
Warrant card
this is a form of identification that a police officer has. it has the authority related to being a police officer
Home Secretary
a senior government minister in charge of the Home Office who has responsibility for crime policy, counter terrorism, immigration and passports
Breach of the peace
when harm is done or likely to be done to a person in their presence, to their property, or a person is in fear of being harmed through assault, an affray, a riot or other disturbance (R v Howell 1982)
Warrant
an official document signed by a judge or magistrate giving a police officer the right to arrest a person o people named in the warrant
Oppression
exercising power or authority in an unjust or cruel way
Adverse inference
a legal inference that goes against the concerned party, for example, assuming that a suspect made no comment so that they could fabricate a story
Forensic Science
the application of scientific knowledge and methods to legal problems and criminal investigations to provide objective and logical evidence for a court of law
Autopsy
(also called post-mortem) an examination of a body after death to determine the cause of death
Toxicology
a scientific study of the nature, effects and detection of chemicals in living organisms
Ballistics
the study of objects that are thrown or shot through the air such as bullets from a gun
