Topic C2 - Bonding, Structure And Properties Of Matter Flashcards
What happens when metals form ions?
They lose electrons from their outer shell to form positive ions
What happens when non-metals form ions?
They gain electrons into their outer shell to form negative ions
What groups are most likely to form ions?
Groups 1, 2, 6 and 7
What do elements in the same group have in common?
The number of outer electrons
How do elements get a full outer shell?
They have to lose or gain the same number of outer electrons to get a full outer shell.
What happens to the metal when a metal and non-metal react together?
It loses electrons to form a positively charged ion.
What happens to the non- metal when metal and non metal react together?
It gains the electrons the metal loses to form a negatively charged ion
What is an ionic bond?
The strong attraction between oppositely charged ions due to electrostatic forces
What do dot and cross diagrams show?
How ionic compounds are formed and the arrangement of electrons in an atom or ion.
What are ionic compounds structures called?
Giant ionic lattice
Do ionic compounds have high or low melting points and boiling points?
They have high boiling and melting points because due to the many strong bonds.
Can ionic compounds conduct electricity?
Not whilst solid but when they melt they can.
What do ionic compounds dissolve easily in?
Water
What is a covalent bond?
A strong bond between two non-metal atoms
