Topic a (hardware) Flashcards
remembering hardware names / descriptions
What is the CPU and what are its functions
The central processing unit is the “central” or “main” processor. It runs the systems OS and apps. It interprets, processes and then executes instructions, most often from the hardware and software programs running in the device
What is the power supply
The power supply enables the PC to work by providing a supply of electricity to the internal components of the computer
what is the graphics card
The hard ware component responsible for displaying and rendering images, videos and animations on your computer monitor
what is a keyboard and what is the mouse
A panel of keys used for putting information including letters, words and numbers into your computer
A hand operated device used for interacting with the monitor
what is a hard drive and what types are there
Solid state drive
optical lens drive
magnetic storage drive
Solid states are used due to their high processing power however they have high cost
optical lens drives are very low cost however do not have very high processing power
magnetic storage devices can contain large amounts of storage
What is a network interface card (NIC)
A component used to connect a computer the internet
What is a printer
A peripheral device used to output text/ photos that appear on computers
what is a scanner
A device that optically scans images, printed text or handwritten images, and then transfers them onto a computer
what is a microphone
used to pick up sound, like a microphone used by a singer and converts the wave audio into electrical signals
why type of ports are there?
Usb ports, a USB is port where it connects peripheral devices to computers. Before the advent of USB technology, a pc either had a parallel or a serial port
parallel is a type of interface found on early computers. It is called parallel due to the way data is sent, parallel ports sent multiple pieces of data at once
serial: a serial port is a serial communication interface through which information transfers in or out sequitionally one bit at a time.
what is the motherboard
It is the main circuit board inside the computer. It connects all the other hardware together (CPU,RAM ETC). It also provides the ability for devices to communicate with each other
What is the RAM
Random access memory provides temporary storage the operating system while the power is on so it can retrieve it quickly
what is the ROM
Read only memory is a type of non-volatile memory, and cannot be altered after being manufactured due to having read-only memory
What is the BIOS
What is the fan
