Topic 9.1 Flashcards
What is the Stomata
Small pores in the epidermis that exchange gas with the environment
What is transpiration?
the process of water vapor escaping during gas exchange
In what direction do plants transport water?
From the roots upwards
When are the stomata primarily open?
during the day when photosynthesis is active
As temps increase, what happens to water inside leaves?
They are warmed and evaporate more quickly
What happens as humidity increases?
the rate of transpiration decreases
What are Xerophytes?
Xerophytes are plants adapted
for survival in deserts and other
dry habitats.
What are Halophytes?
Halophytes are plants adapted to
areas with high salinity soils.
What is a potometer?
A potometer is a device that can
be used to measure water uptake,
and thus transpiration, in plants.
Purpose of Xylem
Transports water and nutrients
from roots to plant tissues.
Purpose of Phloem
Transports sugars made in the
leaves to other plant tissues.
Why are Xylem vessels wide?
For efficient water transport
Why do water molecules stick together when traveling through the Xylem?
Because of their cohesive properties
What is the Transpiration pull?
transpiration pull is able
to move water upwards
against gravity with cohesion
preventing the column from
breaking.
