Topic 9 rocks Flashcards
Minerals
Substances the forms rocks. Every mineral has its own chemical makeup.
lithosphere
The outer layer of the earth includes the crust and the mantle
Magma
A hot combination of molten rock and gases, just underneath the earths surface that has come from the mantle.
Sediments
Materials broken down by the weather and erosion that’s been moved by the wind or water and collects in layers
Native elements
Elements that aren’t combined in the earths crust
Crystals
Geometrical- shaped substance made up of atoms and molecules arranged in one of seven different shapes. The elements the make up a crystal and the conditions that are happening during the growth of the crystal determines the arrangement of the atoms and molecules and also the shape of the crystal.
Lustre
The look of a mineral caused by the way it reflects light. A mineral can appear glassy, waxy, metallic, dull, pearly, silky or brilliant
Streak
The color of a mineral as a powder. By rubbing it onto an unglazed white ceramic tile.
Hardness
How difficult it is to scratch the surface of a solid material. The hardness rating of a mineral is chosen by comparing with the other standard minerals. Diamond has a hardness rating out of 10 and can scratch other minerals with a lower hardness rating
