topic 9 and 10 Flashcards
what is an electrolyte?
an ionic compound that is molten or dissolved in water that conducts electricity and is decomposed by it.
what happens during electrolysis ?
passing an electric current through electrolytes causes the ions to move to the electrodes
ore definition
naturally occurring rocks that contain metals or metal compounds
electrolysis-
splitting up of substances with electricity
eletrolyte-
solution containing ions
electrodes-
rods which conduct electricity
cation-
positive ion
anion-
negative ion
cathode-
negative eletrode
anode-
positive eletrode
what does oil rig stand for
oxidation is loss ( of eletrons )
reduction is gain ( if electrons)
what does (aq) mean?
aqueous ( dissolved in water)
