Topic 8 Paper: (Bishop 2011) Flashcards
What is the aim of Bishop (2011)?
To investigate the causal relationship between maturnal supply rates on the BMI and obesity status of older children in Australia
What are the results found by Bishop (2011)?
That part time or full time work by mothers is associated with a decreas in excess body weight in youths. More analysis shows that this does not operate through increased earned income
What theory can be used to suggest maturnal labour supply & obesity would be positively correlated?
The joint household production model, which suggests that an increase in work must result in a decrease in household activities (such as teaching / encouraging healthy practises in youths, cooking healthy meals, ect)
What empirical problem is tackled by Bishop (2011)?
- Mothers may choose their hours based on their childs health, inducing a positive correlation
- or negative, by working more to support a disabled obese child
- or a third factor, such as mothers ability, might be positively correlated with both health of children & labour supply.
What is the literature on maturnal labour supply & children show?
- In US adverse affect on tests
- In Au, mixed affect on cognitive outcomes
- In Au, adverse affect on child health, 10 hours -> 2%-4% obesity, but evidence not great
What data does Bishop (2011) use?
HILDA!!!
balanced chilren panal from 15-19 in wave 7
