Topic 8-Forests under threat (paper 3) Flashcards
What is interdependence?
two or more things that are dependent on each other
How are rainforests interdependent with biotic and abiotic factors?
1.Climate has to be optimum for plants and animals to survive (abiotic)
2.Animals spend their loves on the canopy of trees to avoid predators (biotic)
3.Vegetation need different areas where they can grow and flourish (biotic)
How are plants adapted in the different layers of tropical rainforests?
SHRUB LAYER-nearest to the ground, very dark, shrubs have large leaves to absorb as much available light as possible
UNDER CANOPY-made up of younger trees, can only survive if there are breaks in the canopy and get a little bit of light
MAIN CANOPY-continuous layer of trees, the dense layer of leaves shades the rest of the forest
EMERGENTS-the top of the rainforest, only have branches and leaves at the top to absorb the light
What are other adaptations in the rainforest?
LIANAS-they wrap around tall trees, they are able to grow quick,as they have to reach the top as soon as possible
DRIP TIP LEAVES-a pointy end at the end of a leaf, stops mold from growing and helps to drain water
BUTTRESS ROOTS-wide deep roots, used to support emergent trees so they can grow tall
