Antihistamines: contraindications

- cardiac disease, kidney disease, hypertension, bronchial asthma, COPD, peptic ulcers, seizures, BPH, and pregnancy

Others include: dry mouth, changes in vision, difficulty urinating, constipation

Used for primary treatment of bronchospastic disorders to control the inflammatory responses that are believed to be the cause of these disorders; they are indicated for persistent asthma
** often used in combination with beta-adrenergic agonists
Contraindications: KDA, never use as a rescue inhaler
adverse effects: The main undesirable effect is pharyngeal irritation, coughing, dry mouth, and oral fungal infections

sympathomimetic
Nasal congestion associated with chronic rhinitis, the common cold, sinusitis, hay fever, and other allergies.
Contraindications: Drug allergy; adrenergic drugs are contraindicated with narrow- angle glaucoma, uncontrolled cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prostatitis, BPH, Or anyone with a history of cerebrovascular accidents.
Adverse effects: usually well tolerated; may include nervousness, insomnia, palpitations, and tremor. In the case of systemic absorption (RARE); Cardiovascular effects such as Hypertension and palpations, and CNS effects of headache, nervousness, and dizziness.
Lorazipam
Instruct patient to inform of any use of MAOI within 14 day of initiating treatment. Drug may cause sleeping disorders such as: Insomnia, restlessness, and may cause anxiety, nervousness. The elderly may be more sensitive to the CNS effects. Avoid taking near bedtime. Avoid taking with other OTC stimulants (I.E. other Nasal decongestants).
Dextromethorphan (robitussin); where acts, what it does, contraindications;
centrally acting cough suppressant (OTC)
Used to stop the cough reflex
contraindicated in hyperthyroidism, cardiac vessel disease, hypertension, and use of MAOIs.
Guaifenesin (mucinex)
