Topic 8-Combustion Flashcards
What is a complete combustion reaction?
When you burn a fuel in plenty of oxygen and the only products formed are carbon dioxide and water.
What is an incomplete combustion?
An incomplete combustion is when the fuel is burned in a limited supply of oxygen and the products contain less oxygen than carbon dioxide. This can happen in some appliances that use carbon compounds as fuels..
What do incomplete combustion’s produce?
1) Incomplete combustions produces carbon monoxide and carbon soot.
Why is carbon monoxide harmful?
1) Carbon monoxide can combine with red blood cells and stop your blood from doing its proper job of carrying oxygen around the body.
2) A lack of oxygen in the blood supply to the brain can lead to fainting, a coma or even death.
Why is soot harmful?
Soot makes building look dirty, reducing air quality and can cause or worsen respiratory problems.
