Topic 8 Flashcards
What did Tycho Brahe propose
The geo-heliocentric model
What was the geo-heliocentric model
The moon and sun orbit the Earth
-all other planetary bodies orbit the Sun
What did the geo-heliocentric model remove
epicycles
What was Brahe’s model based on
Religious and observational claims
What did Copernicus propose for his solar system model
Heliocentric model
What was the heliocentric model
He put the Sun at the centre of the solar system
-Everything orbits the Sun apart from the Moon (which orbits Earth)
Why were Copernicus’ ideas frowned upon
They contradicted religious teachings, from the bible at the time.
Why were Tycho Brahe’s ideas accepted?
They were accepted because it aligned with religious beliefs of the time
-He believed the Earth was too lazy to move
Why was Copernicus’ ideas not accepted
It contradicted the known normality and religious teachings of the time
What did Kepler bring to the solar system model
Refinement of the heliocentric modeel
-he accepted the heliocentric model
-He found that planets don’t have a circular orit around the Sun
What is Kepler’s first law`
Kaw states that planets move in elliptical orbits around the SUn
-Built around two focal points (foci), one is around the SUn and the other is imaginery in space
What is Kepler’s 2nd law
Planets move faster when they are closer to the Sun and slower when away from the SUn
-This is due to the greater gravitational pull of the Sun on the planet, the closer that the planet is to the Sun
What is Kepler’s 3rd law
THe orbital period of a planet squared is proportional to its mean distance from the sun cubed
What shape to planets and comets orbit
THey orbit in ellipses
When is perihelion
Closest to the SUn
