topic 7 - types of variation among pops Flashcards
3 types of geographic variation
sympatric, parapatric, allopatric
defin sympatric
opulations with overlapping geographic distributions
Occupy the same area; can frequently encounter each other
define parapatric
opulations with adjacent but non-overlapping geographic ranges that come into contact
define allopatric
○ Populations with separated distributions
define sub species. why is it contesious? what does it provide?
- A recognizable distinct population occupying a different geographic area from others of the same species
- Remains highly contentious, - traditional subspecies boundaries have been contradicted by molecular phylogenetic data
- Often provides short-cuts for estimating patterns of intraspecific genetic diversity – hence, providing a useful tool for study of evolutionary divergence & conservation
ex of sub species
begal vs sumatran vs siberian tiger
sourthern flicker
not 100% isolation but some
define cline. example? bergmanns rule?
Gradual change in a character or allele frequencies over a geographic distance
White-tailed deer body size; larger in the North
Bergmann’ s Rule; Homeotherms tend to be smaller near the
equator than their more northerly or southerly conspecifics
Lateral line scales in suckers
o Shell colouration in snails
