Topic 7 - Science (lessons 3-5) Flashcards
extinct
When a plant or animal can no longer live in its environment, it may become endangered or extinct.
What is hibernation an example of?
An animal adapting to the colder seasons in order to survive.
You see a bird outside. As you get closer to it, it flies away. What is this an example of?
The bird responding to a stimulus.
Finish the analogy: lungs are to humans as…gills
are to fish and young amphibians.
brain
receives and interprets messages
heart
pumps blood around the body
skeleton
gives shape and aids in movement
lungs
breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide
Think about it. What could cause an animal to become extinct?
Insert your own thoughts here. Think about how air and water pollution could be factors, cutting down forests.
vertebrate skeleton
it helps supports the animal and gives it shape. Without a skeleton, it would have little shape and be unable to move.
gills
take oxygen from the water.
Name two differences between endoskeleton and exoskeleton
1) The endoskeleton grows with you and the exoskeleton does not.
2) The endoskeleton is on the inside of the animal and the exoskeleton is on the outside.
What are two EXTERNAL STRUCTURES that helps animals survive?
Examples:
Skin- The skin protects the animal body and acts as a barrier against harmful materials. For example, Rhinos have thick, rough skin to protect them from the hot African sun and biting insects.
Claws- claws are sharp, pointy structures on the feet of mammals reptiles and birds and are used for capturing, carrying and tearing apart prey.
Fur, feathers and scales- Fur can keep the animal warm in cold weather climates. Feathers help enable most birds to fly. Scales are rough coverings that protects and insulates the body.
