Topic 7 - People And The Biosphere Flashcards
What is a biome
Large scale global ecosystems with distinctive vegetation
What is a climate
Long term average weather conditions of an area
What is an ecosystem
Made up of all living and non living things in an area and their interactions
Distribution =
Pattern
What does temperate mean
Hot summers, cold winters
What is Tundra
A biome that’s cold all year round (Alaska, Canada, Northern Russia)
Where is there a high species diversity?
At the equator
Why are tropical rainforests located at the equator?
Due to the Hadley cells causing the air to rise, condense and sink. Causing low air pressure rainfall. It’s directly heated by the sun all year round.
What is the ITCZ
Where the atmospheric systems of the Northern hemisphere meet those of the Southern Hemisphere.
Latitude
How far north or south of the equator you are
Where do temperate forests occur and why
occur at higher latitudes (eg.UK). There’s a low pressure system with rising air creating year round rainfall. In winter, the sun is lower in the sky so there’s less sun and photosynthesis levels decrease.
Where at Deserts located?
30°North and South
