topic 7: oxidation, reduction and redox equations Flashcards
redox reactions definition
-redox reactions are electron transfer reactions, they require the MOVEMENT OF ELECTRONS.
-they occur when oxidation and reduction are happening simultaneously
-redox reactions involve a transfer of electrons from the reducing agent to the oxidising agent
oxidation
-the process of electron loss, increase in oxidation number, gain of oxygen.
reduction
-the process of electron gain, decrease in oxidation number, loss of oxygen.
oxidising agent
An oxidising agent is one that accepts the electrons. It causes the oxidation and gets reduced.
reducing agent
A reducing agent is the one that donates the electrons. It causes the reduction and gets oxidised.
half equations
Half equations shows the transfer of electrons in a redox reaction.
