Topic #7: Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are most substances in crude oil?
Alkanes
What is the general formula for an alkane?
CnH2n+2
List some uses of hydrocarbons.
petrol, diesel oil, kerosene, heavy fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gases
What is fractional distillation?
Heating crude oil to boiling points, then letting it condense at certain points
What happens as the chains get longer?
They get more viscous, boiling point increases and it becomes less flammable
What is cracking?
Turning hydrocarbons into shorter, more useful alkenes
What is the general formula for an alkene?
CnH2n
How can we test for an alkene?
Add bromine water, if it goes colourless it is an alkene
Are alkenes saturated or not?
They are unsaturated
Name all the functional groups
Alkene: C=C
Alcohol: -OH
Carboxylic Acid: -COOH
What is a monomer?
The repeating unit of a polymer
