Topic 7 - Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
Magnet definition
A magnet is an object which produces a magnetic field around itself, which allows it to exert non-contact forces on other magnetic materials.
What is a field?
A region of space where objects feel a force
What is a pole?
The regions where the magnetic field is the strongest - every magnet has a north and south pole
The regions where the magnetic field is the strongest - every magnet has a north and South Pole
What is an induced magnet?
When a magnetic material (steel, iron, nickel, cobalt) is placed in a magnetic field, it becomes an induced magnet
Relationship of induced magnets to permanent magnets
The magnet is induced in such a way that it is attracted to the magnetic field around that originally produced the field
Which direction do magnetic field lines travel?
North to South
Earth’s North Pole
Is actually a South Pole because the North Pole of a compass is attracted to it
What is an electromagnet?
When an electric current flows it produces a magnetic field around itself
What affects the strength of the electromagnet?
Type of core, size of current, more turns in the coil
How do you find the direction of a magnetic field?
Amperes right hand screw rule
What is current coming out of the page represented by?
A dot/ filled in circle
What is current going into the page represented by?
A cross
