Topic 7 - Genetics, Populations, Evolution and Ecosystems. Flashcards
1
Q
When does inheritance by multiple alleles occur?
A
- It occurs when more than 2 alternative alleles exist for a particular gene locus.
2
Q
How many alleles does an individual inherit for these genes?
A
- Only 2.
3
Q
What is a dihybrid cross?
A
- The inheritance of 2 characteristics controlled by 2 different genes.
4
Q
What could a dihybrid cross show?
A
- The likelihood of inheriting certain combinations of 2 characteristics.
5
Q
What is a phenotype?
A
- The expression of a characteristic due to genotype.
- And the environment.
6
Q
What does the immunoglobulin (I) gene code for?
A
- It codes for the antigens on the surface of red blood cells.
7
Q
What does it mean when alleles are co-dominant?
A
- When alleles are equally expressed in the same phenotype. There is either a visible blend, or both alleles are seen together.
8
Q
What is a genotype?
A
All of the alleles that an organism carries on its chromosomes.
