Q

What is interdependence and a stable community?

A

Interdependence is when one species is removed from a community, the entire community is affected
A stable community is when all the environmental factors are in balance so the population sizes remain fairly constant

Q

What is an ecosystem, community and population?

A

Ecosystem=the interaction between a community of living organisms and how they react with the environment
Community=All of the different species living in the same habitat
Population=same or similar species living in a given area of habitat

Q

Describe the water cycle!

A

Water in the seas/oceans evaporates in water vapour, which then condenses and turns into clouds, the clouds come together to form bigger heavier clouds. In precipitation, the clouds release rain/snow/sleet. Which then either travels back to the seas, or percolates through the soil and is absorbed the plants which then release it as water vapour by transpiration. Water from predication is fresh water

Q

Describe the carbon cycle!

A

Plants/algae take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis, they respire and release some CO2 back to the atmosphere or are eaten by animals which then respire and release carbon dioxide back to atmosphere. This can happen again and the animal is eaten by another. When the animal releases waste or dies, the carbon is taken by decomposing microorganisms who respire. If sufficient conditions for microorganisms are not met, the carbon forms fossil fuels. The fossil fuels are burnt by humans and the process of combustion release carbon to the atmosphere.

Q

What is biodiversity and what does great biodiversity lead to ?

A

The variety of different species/organisms living on earth or within an ecosystem
Great biodiversity reduced the dependence of species on another for food, provides shelter and maintain the physical environment

Q

How are humans decreasing biodiversity through land use?

A

Quarrying, farming and building infrastructure
Destruction of peat bogs reduces habitats and variety of species-the decay and burning of peat also releases carbon dioxide

Q

How is deforestation reducing biodiversity? And what for?
What does deforestation lead to ?

A

Deforestation creates land for crops to be grown for biofuels, land for farming cattle and paddy fields which destroys habitats
This also contributes to global warming-disease, loss of habitats, loss of species

16
Q

Why and how are humans reducing biodiversity?

A

Due to increasing population and living standards, waste and demand for food is increasing which leads to habitat loss and global warming—> extreme weather, changes in migration patterns, sea levels rising, ice caps melting

17
Q

What biological factors threat food security?

A

Increasing birth rate
Conflict
Changing diets in developing countries-food in lower supple is shipped away from locals to countries around the world
New pests/pathogens affecting farming
Cost of agriculture inputs-pesticides, machinery, fertilizers

18
Q

How do you calculate the efficiency of biomass transfer between trophic levels?

A

Efficiency=Biomass available after transfer% biomass available before transfer x100

19
Q

What are some farming techniques used to improve efficiency?

A

Limit animals movement, control the temperature,—> reduce amount of respiration and energy release, free protein rich food for growth

20
Q

Advantages and disadvantages of farming techniques of restricting energy transfer

A

+ more efficient, can control what the animals eat-ensure nutritional needs met
- unethical, disease more likely to spread-antibiotics-possible antibiotic resistance, animals in tight spaces could become stressed

21
Q

Ways of conserving fish stocks

A

Making the nets smaller, increasing net mesh size to allow younger fish to escape and breed, quotas to limit amount of fish that can be caught, restrict fishing during spawning season

22
Q

What is mycoprotein and advantages

A

Made from the fungus fusarium- grown on glucose syrup in aerobic conditions, harvested and purified to create protein alternatives for vegetarians
High in fiber, quick to grow, easy to handle, can be grown anywhere, protein rich

23
Q

How can genetically modified food be used?

A

GM bacterium produces human insulin which can be sued to treat diabetes
Can add vitamins to foods-golden rice
